HBO's True Blood Season 3 Premiere Set - Are You Ready? - Page 2
Part of the charm of this show is the way it weaves the supernatural world, within the contemporary world. This is the brilliance of Harris' work. She takes the absurd and mythological and gives it origin and meaning, some in a very serious way, but all with the right amount of tongue-in-cheek humor.
There's politics, both within the supernatural world between the various types of "supes" and how they all interact with each other. Vampires feel superior to werewolves, werewolves feel superior to shapeshifters and humans have yet to fully come to terms with the existence of any of these creatures, which creates a whole separate set of political issues. The upcoming third season will introduce the audience to the world of werewolves and their "relationship" with vampires.
The vampires are fighting for equal rights and treatment within the human world. For humans in the story, it's as though they suddenly discovered an alien race living among them, whose inherent proclivity is to feed on human blood, but who now have "options" — synthetic blood. These "options" introduce morality dilemmas within the vampire world itself. Some believe humans are nothing more than cattle, while others are hoping to mainstream into human culture and choose to survive using fake blood, or willing humans who sacrifice their blood in exchange for the aphrodisiac-like qualities of submitting to vampires. These folks are a breed apart and are often referred to as "fangbangers" in the book.
