Chevy hits the jackpot with their hilarious “Happy Grad” Super Bowl commercial. “Happy Grad”, submitted by 26 year old Zach Borst, was chosen as the winner of the Chevrolet Route 66 video submission contest. The commercial will probably finish 10 or 11 on the USA Today ad meter out of 56 spots which is remarkable considering it was shot on a $500 budget. Chevy didn't even supply the car. Touchdown for Chevy!!

While watching the commercial you almost wish it was a full length movie. The starring father figure is actor and Norwalk resident attorney Robert Sciglimpaglia and the son is played by comedian Brett Sidell. In the commercial Sidell fails to realize that his parent’s gift is simply a small dorm sized refrigerator and instead only sees the yellow Chevy in front of him once his blindfold is removed. In an overly ecstatic rant and rave he begins screaming and racing around yelling the catchy lines “Best Gift Ever” and “Best Day Ever”. Robert Sciglimpaglia hilariously attempts to ease his wife’s worried response urging her to wait it out and calmly suggesting they let their sons rant run its course. He even tells her that their son seems to be running out of steam as he only becomes more and more excited. Robert towards the end waves to his confused neighbor Steve and says, “Love the car”, who is in fact the real Chevy car owner. Funny stuff…I literally LOL (laughed out loud)!

When Robert Sciglimpaglia was asked about shooting the commercial with Zach Borst he replied, "Zach was amazing! He pays such attention to detail, but he doesn't micromanage. He lets the actors act. I did this little Vanna White thing where I opened and closed the refrigerator door. That was completely ad-libbed."

Chevy chose the commercial as it contained all the important elements the company was looking for: light-heartedness and a commitment to the Chevrolet name. In June of 2011, Robert Sciglimpaglia did an off-Broadway play with Jamie Kehoane, who recommended him for the slot of the father and now plays his wife in the new popular ad.
