The TV Czar's Emmy Ballot: Outstanding Drama Series
For some crazy reason, the Academy refuses to give me an Emmy ballot. Seems preposterous to me, but I suppose I have to accept their decision. Since they won't let me have my say, I've decided to submit my personal Emmy ballots via Technorati. The series will cover my ballots for the major Emmy awards leading up to the actual nominations on July 19.
We’ve finally arrived at the end of the Emmy ballot series. I hope you’ve enjoyed the look at my picks for the Emmy nominations that will come out tomorrow. Today, we close the series by looking at the crown jewel of the Emmys: The Outstanding Drama Series.
Mad Men- The four time returns with another Emmy worthy season. It’s definitely going to get a strong push from Breaking Bad and maybe even Homeland, but Mad Men remained as strong as ever this year. Other critics had a few issues with this season, but the overwhelming love continues. This season gave us several Hall of Fame episodes without a ton of drop off to the next tier. The next show on the list is the only that can approach it in quality.
Breaking Bad- Breaking Bad deserves an Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. Unfortunately, the show has come along in the same time period as the Emmy hogs at Mad Men. At least Bryan Cranston can feel good about one-upping Jon Hamm every year. The shows are vastly different, but Breaking Bad’s visual excellence and story continuity are second to none. Everything on the show has a consequence. The show comes right at you in the most visceral way possible. I would not complain a single bit if this particular season of Breaking Bad triumphed over Mad Men. From the performances of Aaron Paul, Giancarlo Esposito, Bryan Cranston, and Bob Odenkirk, it’s tough to ask for anything more.
Homeland- Homeland has a chance to garner some votes here under the “Shiny New Thing” category. It got brilliant acting from Claire Danes, Damian Lewis, and Mandy Patinkin while managing to ratchet up the intensity of the show to somewhere near Breaking Bad levels. Some people took issue with the finale, but I didn’t mind where they went and can’t wait for next season. The entire season was crafted brilliantly.
