UK's Megahit The X FACTOR Coming to Fox in 2011
Fox network announced yesterday that The X FACTOR will be making its debut to US audiences in the fall of 2011.
The X FACTOR was created and launched in the UK by Simon Cowell of American Idol fame in 2004. It is currently shown in 17 countries with a considerable audience of more then 500 million. Cowell will serve as executive producer and judge in the US version.
The show is a joint venture between Cowell and Sony Music Entertainment. Simon Cowell has already proved his uncanny ability to create megahits here and abroad. There is every reason to expect that the US version of X FACTOR will fare no differently, although there are some significant differences in the show. Here's a basic run down of how X-Factor handles the competition differently.
- No age restrictions and groups can compete. Contestants are separated according to ages though. Ages 16-24 are their own group, separated by gender, then everyone over 24, and then group acts.
- Judges are assigned to a group and are responsible for on-going mentoring of that group and working with them throughout the competition. Judges also become advocates for their selected group as the competition gets more heated.
- The X Factor airs in the fall, as opposed to the late winter/spring like American Idol.
All this upheaval should make for an interesting final season for Simon Cowell on American Idol.
