Zooey Deschanel to Play Groupie in HBO TV Pilot Series
My inner 15-year old was tickled awake by Deadline.com’s report that HBO has greenlit a pilot based on Pamela Des Barres’ rock n’ roll memoir I’m With the Band: Confessions of a Groupie. Zooey Deschanel stars in the 30 minute dramedy.
The book I’m With the Band, updated and reissued in 2005, chronicles "Miss Pamela’s" adventures as the world's “most famous” groupie during the heady 1960s. Her candid accounts of mischief with some of the most legendary figures of rock and roll is one of the ultimate backstage and behind the scenes accounts of the Sunset Boulevard/Laurel Canyon music scene.
Des Barres is widely considered to be the model for the Penny Lane character in Cameron Crowe’s film Almost Famous. However, while Penny was ultimately a tragic figure in the film, Des Barres' recollections in I’m With the Band celebrate her coming-of-age as an honest, funny, and unapologetic response to a one of the most exciting moments in music and pop culture.
Pamela Des Barres and her ex-husband, musician Michael Des Barres, have signed on as Executive Producers for the series.
