4/20: The Recap of an Unofficial Holiday

As a college student, I spend my time in class with a variety of people. Some of them go to church every Sunday, others smoke pot right after their service.

These aren't just your average "potheads" - some of them have higher grades than I do. Regardless, as much as many of us hate to acknowledge it, marijuana and cannabis culture are universal, as is the concept of "4/20". Cannabis culture has reached a new high that hasn't been seen since the seventies. Besides 46.9% of college students, many others smoke it. Your grandma may even be smoking it!

Half of college students, myself included, have tried pot once in their lifetime. While some of us left that as a once-in-a-lifetime experience, like me, others practically worship the drug. Bob Marley was once quoted as saying "When you smoke the herb, it reveals you to yourself."

So, where exactly did 4/20 come from? Well, it started in San Rafael, California- presumably as a police code for smoking pot in progress. At least, that is what many think. In fact, the term originated with a group of five high school students, known as Waldos, at a high school in San Rafael who enjoyed smoking together. With the help of The Grateful Dead, the term has become a universal time for pot smokers to get stoned together.

Here are some fun 4/20 facts, fun, and news updates:

  • University of Colorado-Boulder's annual smoke-out took place, much to the chagrin of school administrators.
  • "Because I Got High" singer, Afroman, was sued for allegedly missing a concert. Oh, the irony!
  • The Texas Department of State Health Services has banned the sales of synthetic marijuana products, such as K2 and Spice.
  • Snoop Dogg celebrated the holiday by taking hits from one of his favorite pieces, while Willie Nelson used his vaporizer in lieu of a joint due to issues with congestion.
  • April 20 is also Adolf Hitler's birthday or, at least...was. Carmen Electra shares this birthday.
  • The Baha'i holiday, Ridvan, also began on April 20th.
  • Use these pick up lines at next-year's 4/20 festivities, wherever you will be!

As Arnold Schwarzenneger once said: "That is not a drug, it's a leaf!"
