A Testament to the Human Spirit
This week, in the public eye, and in my own life, I have seen true testaments to the power of the human spirit. The strength of the heart in the face of overwhelming odds. The determination to carry on no matter what is at stake.
For the last two days, I was absolutely mesmerized by the Phoenix in Chile, rising out of the earth almost three dozen times. The cheers from the crowd, the kisses and tears. It filled me with love, with hope, with compassion for what their experience had been.
The survival of those 33 miners, for me, is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, how much we truly have when we focus our efforts. It is a testament of faith, that no matter how dire the situation may have appeared, those miners were determined to survive. It is a testament of love - pure, expressed love - for their country, for their families, for their Gods. And for all of us watching, a testament to the love that we can feel for our fellow human beings.
This morning, I sat in a local Catholic church at the funeral for a 20-year-old daughter of a friend of mine. The young woman received a heart transplant at 7 years of age, and only recently, in the last few years, did her body begin to betray her and reject the heart. In her short lifetime, however, she changed so many lives through her presence.
Amidst the tears of grief this morning, there were stories of a mischievous child; a big sister who always looked out for her ten year old brother; a loving neighbor who was the Pied Piper of her neighborhood, and a college student. That no matter how dire her situation seemed to be, she never complained, and she always shared her time, talents, and love with others.
Another testament to the power of the human spirit. Despite all of the obstacles that she most likely faced, in fighting in the battle for her very life, this young woman named Jessie never wavered in her offering of her very best to her fellow human beings, be they family or friend. She gave of herself to all whom she came into contact with.
As my weekend approaches, I am filled with a deep sense of gratitude. Gratitude for my family and my healthy daughter. Gratitude for my own health and safe existence.
And, a gratitude for being able to witness, and be part of, the testament of true human love.
