Are Human Beings Ruled By The Head or By The Heart?
ONE OF OUR BIGGEST misconceptions is that human beings are ruled by the head, their decisions based solely on the logic and reasoning powers of the mind. As compelling as this may sound, nothing is further from the truth.
While the head may sit atop the body's throne like a king overlooking its kingdom, it is, in reality, the jealous brother who seeks to usurp the power of the real king — the human heart.
In fact, the head is so weak that although people seek its advice and vow to obey its every word, it loses virtually every time to the heart, which is why an appeal to man should never be made to the head alone, because without the heart's support man will rarely be convinced to take the logical action.
For those of you who remain unconvinced, think about the decisions you've made in your life. How many times did you tell yourself not to eat that last piece of cake, but you did so anyway? How many times did you plead with yourself not to spend anymore money, yet that's exactly what you ended up doing?
It may sound overly simplistic, but the explanation is quite clear: Human beings don't react with logic; they react with emotion since the heart prevails over the head in every bitter dispute.
Ironically, the resistance to logic and reliance on emotion are what makes us uniquely human. Though we may not always succeed, humans must strive to see that the yearnings of the heart willfully come to same conclusion as the head as often as possible.
