Beyond the Bottom Line: Manufacturing with the Environment in mind

Should government include environmental concerns in its new national manufacturing policy?
What exactly is the cost and benefits of addressing the difficulties and efforts required to execute sustainable development and economic growth?
What would it take to significantly develop and adopt green and clean technologies, promote green purchasing network and to motivate companies to make the switch?
Asia's largest fair on green products and technologies, rechristened Eco Products International Fair (EPIF)-2011, is scheduled to be held March 3-6, next year in Delhi's Pragati Maidan.
This will be the event where officials from different governments, corporations, companies, manufacturers, and consumers will get to see what's the latest in green technologies; it will be a site for people to exchange ideas and where companies can size up their competition's progress in the latest research and development.
Chairman of EPIF's 2011 Preparatory Committee, Takashi Yamagishi, explained the role of the Japanese private sector in promoting sustainable development through environmental protection measures.
He emphasized that objectives of manufacturing various products through environment-friendly technologies could be met only through a strong partnerships between the public and private sectors as well as developed and developing countries.
The EPIF 2011 is being held to promote and disseminate information on eco-friendly technologies, products and services that enhance sustainable productivity.
Hopefully, with each passing year, more countries will join Japan in exploring green technologies. It is undeniable that any development takes capital, costs money, and years of vision, planning, and labor, but true mastery and the resulting gratification come from such investments of money and effort. Unless we are motivated enough to do the right thing even without government legislation and to investigate what appears to be impossible (e.g. a single-pilot, 26-hour flight powered only by the sun), we will never experience the amazement of human ingenuity and creativity.
