Child Arrested for Defacing School Desk
My how some things have changed since I was in school. Oh, wait. I still am. I teach.
Still, even I was a smidge shocked when I read about a 12-year-old New York City girl who was arrested for writing on her desk with a lime green marker in her Spanish class.
The offending doodles? — “I love my friends Abby and Faith” and “Lex was here 1/1/10.”
Oh yeah, and let’s not forget that sinister Mr. Smiley Face.
Now, the story doesn’t exactly specify what transpired next, so I’m not sure how things went from Mr. Smiley Face to Mr. Police Officer. But apparently before you could say, “Clorox Wipes,” those locking silver bracelets were slapped on and Alexa Gonzales was escorted across the street to the local precinct.
Of course, now comes the investigation.
“We’re looking at the facts,” City Education Department spokesperson David Cantor told the New York Daily News. “Based on what we’ve seen so far, this shouldn’t have happened.”
The police department weighed in as well, saying that “common sense should prevail and discretion used” in such situations.
That common sense and discretion probably should have included something like a detention or two.
The courts assigned Gonzalez to eight hours of community service, a book report and an essay on what she’s learned from her ordeal.
Now if all this hoopla had all been about a wad of chewed up gum stuck under a desk…
