Do You Still Chase Your Career Dream?
When we are young we nearly always have dreams we wish to achieve, be they in life or in our careers. It's become almost a cliche that you should live life with as few regrets as possible, but new research by careers service Monster.co.uk suggests that many of us are doing the exact opposite.
A poll conducted by Monster.co.uk has revealed that more than 40 per cent of respondents regret not following their dreams when it comes to their careers.
The survey found the most common unfulfilled career dreams were becoming a doctor or a vet while pursuing a career as professional sports player or an actor were a close second. Most of those unfulfilled dreamers ended up working in IT, education or admin roles.
Those in their 40's were found to be most disenfranchised with their chosen careers, with nearly half wishing they'd followed their dreams instead. By the time they reached 60, this fell to under a third.
Michael Gentle, spokesperson for Monster UK & Ireland, said it is common to look back on childhood ambitions and think about what could have been.
"It's important to decide whether this is simply nostalgia, or whether you are genuinely unhappy in your current role," he added.
"While it may be too late to become a professional footballer or a doctor, it's never too late to try a new role or industry."
