Gabrielle Gifford and Captain Kelly- A Love Story
I recently read a beautiful article about the marriage of Gabrielle Gifford and Captain Kelly. The astronaut/Navy pilot and Representative — could you think of a more beautiful power couple?
From their wedding day, they have been able to "weather the storm" together and, since the recent assassination attempt on Gifford's life, sources say that this hasn't changed. Despite two demanding careers nearly three states apart, that has yet to stop Captain Kelly from being with his wife, who recently suffered a gunshot wound through her brain.
Like many couples, they had a unique first date. For most, a tour of the Arizona State Prison may seem strange. However, for Captain Kelly, it was fascinating. In a long distance relationship, they understood that they needed face time and tried to see each other about twice a month, like my sweetheart and I do. Firsthand, I can tell you that long distance relationships are rough, but I can't imagine the stress that they were under. Like any doting husband, Captain Kelly was there to watch her open her eyes, encouraging her. If that's not the power of love, what is?
I rarely shed a tear when writing. However, this one is an exception. I could not think of a more beautiful love story and, as someone in a very complicated long distance relationship, this gives me so much hope. Love can truly conquer all.
