Gluten-Free on a Shoestring: 125 Easy Recipes for Eating Well on the Cheap by Nicole Hunn
Why is it that a diet that is something-free always costs more than a plain-old diet? Why are something-free products always more expensive than their non-free equivalents? Okay, maybe I’m exaggerating and “always” isn’t the right word, but it would cost more to read an exaggeration-free column, wouldn’t it?
What about a gluten-free diet? The problem is all those substitutes for wheat flour. Some are fairly reasonably priced, others…well, if you burned the biscuits, you’d be suicidal. And then there are the other substitutions one must make… Gluten-free cooking can cost three or more times the cost of one-recipe-fits-all cooking.
Nicole Hunn, the talent behind glutenfreeonashoestring.com, put together a cookbook that gets around those high costs of eating with recipes that are easy and affordable. Make macaroni and cheese for 59% less than on-the-shelf products, chocolate chip brownies for 71% less, and berry scones for 76% less. One of my faves—soft pretzels—can be made for a whopping 91% less than you would pay for the same thing on the shelf. The savings add up when you can make dinner rolls for twenty-seven cents each, compared to the frozen variety at $1.87 per roll.
While there are comforting main dish recipes and tempting veggies, the real reason to get Gluten-Free on a Shoestring is the baked goodies. Muffins, scones, cookies, cakes, pies, pizza, crackers…need I continue? How about bagels, cinnamon rolls, and toaster pastries? Hunn has assembled 125 recipes that say “make me, make me!,” and all the reader need do is pick where to start. (I chose “Sweet Potato Biscuits”).
In addition to the recipes, Gluten-Free on a Shoestring includes shopping tips, advice for being gluten-free, and inventories of a well-stocked pantry. It is a user-friendly cookbook with satisfying recipes that are easy to prepare. Saving money is the icing on the (gluten-free) cake.
Scheduled for a March 1 release, Gluten-Free on a Shoestring is available to pre-order now.
