The most frightening argument is “it doesn’t affect us.” What kind of people (and society) are we if we are not affected by the horrific acts committed by one of our members? Are we not all affected by the failure of the criminal justice system? Doesn’t any injustice—large or small—affect us all? Or are we only affected when our favorite athlete scores, our home team wins?

Has Michael Vick repaid his debt to society? Legally, yes. However, it is impossible to concede that one good season on the playing field or thousands of words of repentance can begin to erode the debt he ran up when he chose to be a monster. For those who find this reasoning hard or impossible to understand, who believe that Vick’s responsibility ended the day he got out of jail, think of it this way: if you go on a shopping spree, charging everything to your MasterCard or American Express, when you stop shopping, do you stop owing?
