Honey and Hay Fever
Spring is here; so are allergies. Spring has arrived a little early this year and many who suffer from hay fever are already feeling the need to see their physicians. There is no dearth of medicines that treat such allergies. Medication can open clogged sinuses, suppress headaches, turn off the tap of running nose, soothe watery eyes and so forth. However, such medication only treats the symptoms and does not cure, much less heal. Ultimately, you are introducing artificial chemicals in your biological system. Your body does not know what to do with them.
Allergy, in simple terms, is your body's reaction to what it perceives foreign. Ayurveda, the ancient Indian system of natural medicine, links all allergies to an internal imbalance and disharmony of three humors of wind, bile and phlegm. It states that the immune system of each individual can develop bias or prejudice towards certain substances, almost as if it has its own intelligence and ability to discriminate. For example, two siblings sharing the same domicile and demographics may be allergic to different things.
Ayurveda has some excellent remedies that can completely heal the patient over time training his internal system to no longer treat allergens as foreign. If your body starts accepting pollen, you will no longer be allergic to pollen.
One such home remedy is honey. Honey is made by bees that collect pollen from flowers. Consuming honey that is made locally is the easiest way of telling your body that pollen is good. As your body starts to accept and process honey, it will do the same with any intake of pollen by way of breathing. This treatment takes one full cycle of four seasons, a regular consumption is required for the whole year. Ayurveda prescribes treatment of honey for applying, consuming and even for eye-drops. However, if you are allergic to honey, this remedy is not for you. Ayurvedic texts also list holy basil and turmeric as two other substances that boost your immune system and help you fight against allergies. Among fruits, most such citrus fruits as oranges and grapefruit also strengthen your immune system.
Eat well. Be well. You are important.
