Is Higher Learning Worth It?

It seems almost impossible to have a decent paying job or career that doesn't involve flipping burgers without a college degree.

Every year, millions of Americans attend a college or university. Some are fresh out of high school. Others are coming back from years of pursuing another chapter in their lives, and there are some older students who are beyond their years, yet never had the chance to earn their degree.

Of these millions of people, there are different ways in which they find to pay in order to receive their diploma. Students are either awarded scholarships, have family members pay for it, work for it in the colleges or universities, tuition remission where family members work at the college or university and the student attends for free, or take out a loan.

Millions of graduates find themselves falling more and more into debt once they’ve received their diploma. About two-thirds of students graduated with debt due to college loans. 

After two or four years of late night studying, ten page papers and more than one exam in a single day, it seems as though there is no sense of accomplishment upon the day of commencement.

Students sit in their caps and gowns, listening to the speaker as he or she talks about looking ahead to the future with hopes and dreams, and to never let anyone tell them they cannot achieve what they believe is rightfully theirs. However, most of these students will have to look ahead to the future of paying off loans. Many will see years pass before they’ve paid off half of their loans.

Many employers require a college degree from those who are seeking employment, and most require a Bachelor’s degree. But when tuition at a four year university is less than $9,000 per year, is it worth it to go to college? A growing number of jobs are now beginning to exclude the requirement of any college degree.
