Arthritis - The Condition


Understanding the term arthritis explains much about the condition itself. "Arth" in the Greek language relates to joints & "itis" suggests inflammation.

With arthritis the all or a number of the major joints may be affected. Arthritis affects many people world wide. This arthritic condition can turn even the simplest chore into an endurance battle!

What should we know about arthritis and how can our choices make living with arthritis more tolerable?

Two Major Forms of Arthritis

Osteo-Arthritis: Generally caused as a result of an injury or the general wear and tear of the cartilage. The cartilage actually covers the bone at the point where it meets the joint.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: Is not an injury or wear and tear problem. Rheumatoid arthritis is actually an autoimmune disease. This form of arthritis affects the membranes that line the joint.

Managing Arthritis with Sensible Choices

The personal choices we make today may cause additional stress on our joints tomorrow. The aging process and previous lifestyle habits either healthy or unhealthy likely catch up with us!

By establishing healthy choices early in life may help to make living a little easier later on!

Inflammation & Arthritis - Goal 1 - Reduce Inflammation!

Maintaining the proper weight for our size helps to prevent heavier than normal loading on the hips & knees. Extra body fat may be capable of producing even greater levels of inflammation.

Regulating the consumption of saturated fats, trans fats and omega 6 oils often contained in many of the refined foods is a great place to start.

Arthritis and Particular Food Types

Cold-water Omega-3 is now recognized as a useful substance to reduce inflammation, swelling, stiffness & tiredness. Various sources of cold water omega-3 can be found in fatty fish, walnuts and flax seeds.
