Contrary to current rumors being delivered to email boxes all over the country, stargazers this evening should not expect see anything quite as spectacular as "two moons" in the night sky.

Experts say declarations that Mars will appear to be the same size as Earth's moon tonight are false.

The hoax chain email claiming a "once in a life-time" sighting that "NO ONE ALIVE TODAY WILL EVER SEE THIS AGAIN", has made annual reappearances since 2003 when Mars, at 56 million kilometres away, was the closest it has ever been to Earth.

Even then, Mars was not close enough to look like anything more than an ordinary star.

Astronomers say that if the red planet were ever close enough to appear the same size as the moon, the tides would be affected and large tracts of land would be submerged.
