Solar Eruption 7 March 2012A massive solar storm is heading straight towards earth at a tremendous speed of four million miles per hour. The sun emitted the massive flares this Tuesday. This flares are expected to arrive early Thursday EST.

This storm is said to be the largest in the past five years. This massive solar storm may disrupt power grids, GPS services, airline schedules, satellite navigation systems for the next few days.

The flares or solar storms are a part of sun's 11 year cycle. Last solar flare occurred in 2001. This storm may have huge effect at North and south pole regions. Solar flares are very harmful to satellite networks and power grids.

A solar flare, or solar storm, is defined as a sudden, rapid, and intense variation in brightness.  A solar flare occurs when magnetic energy that has built up in the solar atmosphere is suddenly released. Radiation is emitted across virtually the entire electromagnetic spectrum, from radio waves at the long wavelength end, through optical emission to x-rays and gamma rays at the short wavelength end. The amount of energy released is the equivalent of millions of 100-megaton hydrogen bombs exploding at the same time.

The most powerful flare ever observed was the first one to be observed, on September 1, 1859, and was reported by British astronomer Richard Carrington. The event was named the Solar storm of 1859, or the Carrington event. The flare was visible to a naked-eye, and produced stunning auroras down to tropical latitudes such as Cuba or Hawaii, and set telegraph systems on fire. The flare left a trace in Greenland ice in the form of nitrates and beryllium-10, which allow its strength to be measured today.
