Pheromones and Attraction- I'm a Believer!
It's no secret that Spring is a time for love and romance. I'm not a scientist. However, I am starting to believe in these pheromones that I have read about. Really!
As some of you may know, I took up Jiu Jitsu about a month ago and really enjoy it! Now, like most combat sports, my Jiu Jitsu class is male-dominated. Some of them are older than me, others younger. In general, I like to grapple with people who are close in age. A few weeks ago, I was partnered up with a very attractive guy in my class who, to my delight, smells intoxicating. In fact, I even informed him of this. It turns out that he doesn't wear anything heavily scented or cologne- he naturally just smells that awesome. Needless to say, that got a bit distracting.
Olfactory communication plays a huge role in how animals, including humans, interact with each other. Smell is one of the most important things in determining whether or not someone will date you. In fact, it trumps both looks and personality. Smell makes us think someone is better look than they really are. For example, Las Vegas casinos have been pumping fragrance into the air for years to get people to stay longer and spend more money.
Some scientists believe that odors help us find a mate. Pheromones have been known to influence sex, attraction, and aggression. These hormones determine whether or not we are attracted to someone. Now, it may not be a life mate but, it will be someone we will like.
Ironically, while a man's nose can be fooled, research suggest that a woman's can't. Interesting, isn't it? Stress, happiness, joy, and many other hints to our emotion and state of being can be subliminally inferred from smell. While men are typically attracted to the scent of vanilla, women are attracted to the scent of sandalwood.
So, what can you do to test this?
1. Wear minimal or no perfume/ cologne one day.
2. Go fragrance-free for a week and see what happens.
3. If you are looking for a long-term relationship, hold up on taking birth control pills. Apparently, this can alter your sense of smell.
Pheromones have spawned synthetic cologne versions that are supposed to help you attract lovers like crazy! While I have had some success with them, I would tell you to try it for yourself. In general, as long as you smell your best, you will be a step ahead in attracting a partner.
