Public College Allows Transgendered Man to Use Same Locker Room as Young Girls
Evergreen State College in Washington is allowing a transgendered man who now refers to himself as Colleen Francis to use a shared locker room with underage girls. The public college rents out its swimming pool and facilities to the community and local high schools. Several parents have called the college protesting that their daughters have seen a 45 year-old man naked in the women's locker room. The man referenced by parents is transgendered Evergreen State student Colleen Francis who has been permitted by the college to use areas designated for women such as locker rooms and bathrooms. Francis claims that although biologically a man, he has the right to use women's facilities because he defines his gender identity as a woman. Parents calling the school complaining about the situation claim that a biological man should not be allowed to use the women's locker room and that their daughters' should not be exposed to male genitalia in a women's locker room at a public school.
Parents went as far as filing police reports regarding the issue. One report claims a parent complained that her daughter walked in on a middle-aged man naked with his legs wide open sitting in a sauna. In the wake of many complaints, the state college released a statement of "State law doesn’t allow us to ignore gender identity disorder as one of the protected classes. Therefore the transgendered individual has the right to use our facilities, including the locker rooms." Francis also spoke of the situation to a local news station saying, “This is not 1959 Alabama. We don’t call police for drinking from the wrong water fountain.”
The police report also stated that the law is vague in this area in Washington and it was unlikely that the authorities would pursue any charges. Local school officials have come up with a temporary solution. The young girls are now using a small locker room juxtaposed to the main locker room to avoid Francis. Parents are still angry though, that their daughters as young as six years old are being exposed to male nudity the women's locker room. Some have sought legal recourse with Alliance Defending Freedom. Lead legal counselor David Hacker released a statement "Clearly, allowing a person who is biologically a man to undress and expose himself to young girls places those girls at risk for emotional distress and harm....Little girls should not be exposed to naked men, period."
