Every day, thousands of dogs are abandoned, neglected, or abused in the United States. In cities like Detroit, homeless dogs roam the streets, many dying from extremes in weather. Dogs that are removed from negative circumstances or surrendered by owners who can't handle the responsiblity are placed in county animal “shelters” where many of them are “euthanized” because no one has an interest in them. Puppy mills stay in business because of a certain snobbery: some people want a dog, but only purebred. Many of those coveted dogs also end up in the hands of animal control because the owners couldn’t or wouldn’t take care of them.

A share of proceeds from the sale of Pure Gold: Adventures with Six Rescued Golden Retrievers by Holli Pfau supports dog rescue and adoption programs. Within its pages, Pfau recounts her experiences as a dog rescuer. Like many who rescue dogs, she dealt with dogs that required surgery, dogs that exhibited behavioral problems, and that one perfect dog. She dedicated herself to rescuing Golden Retrievers and “one by one they arrived on the doorstep.”

Pfau shares the ups and downs of living with her six (Nikki, Bodie, Sophie, Tucker, Daisy, and Chatter) as well as the known details of their lives previous to their rescue. People who love their dogs will identify with the many nicknames for Nikki, the adventure of agility training, and the pure insanity of trying to move across country. Pfau tells of visiting hospital patients and her dogs’ reactions to a variety of events and stimuli, but more than anything else, she chronicles her great love and respect for these dogs.

Pure Gold: Adventures with Six Rescued Golden Retrievers is highly recommended for anyone considering rescuing a dog and for people who love dogs. Hopefully, it will inspire others to stop by their local animal shelters and rescue forever friends of their own.
