Review: Grateful Dead Wine
Overview
Wines that Rock recently sent me a bottle of their new Grateful Dead wine which is a Merlot named after the famous American Rock band of the same name. Wines that Rock is known for their line of “Rock Band” namesake wine product line which feature packaging and marketing geared towards rock aficionados.
Price
Wine that Rock's Grateful Dead Wine is priced at $49.99 for a 3-Bottle-Pack which when priced individually seems to be proportionate with the cost of a economy wine.
Taste
Grateful Dead Wine is a fusion of blending Syrah, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel & Grenache. I found the taste to be bold with a deep fruit accent and yet also the taste of the oak and redwood from the aging process is highlighted in this unique Merlot.
Aging and Region
Winemaker Mark Beaman is based out of Ukiah, California a place that I'm fondly familiar with and know to be a great wine region in California. Grateful Dead Wine is aged for 20 months in barrel made from French Oak and Redwood. Ukiah is located in Mendocino County, California and is know to be the runner up wine region after the Napa Valley.
About the Winemaker
Mike Beaman a former Peacecorps member who is from Washington State originally had learned to make wine while in East Africa. He started of making honey wine with a local who went by the name of “Ngowi” and later after his return to the states he took a number of winery apprenticeships and finally landed at Mendocino Wine Co.
The Bottom Line
Grateful Dead wine is a unique Merlot not just because it carries the name of a famous rock band but because the taste and aging process including use of a combination of oak and redwood brings a almost artisan experience to wine aficionados. This wine could be served in a variety of applications but in my opinion it would make an excellent story for a supper with friends and family.
