A Trip Into My Past
In 1991 I went to Germany to work for the European Space Agency (ESA) for three years. Ever since working there I've always wanted to go back and see just how much the town of Darmstadt has changed and also to look over some old places I used to visit.
So last month I decided to go and take a look instead of just talking about it. I remembered from 1991 that there were a lot of English people in the town and every time you went into a bar or restaurant or shop there were English people there, so I was interested to see if it was still the same. One place we English always used to meet was the Zum Landgrafen Pub in the center of Darmstadt, so I was definitely going to take a visit there.
I arrived at Frankfurt Airport and immediately got a taxi to Darmstadt, I stayed at the Best Western hotel which was in the center of the town.
I arrived at the hotel and took the tram down to Robert Bosch Strasse which is where ESA was. Obviously I wasn't allowed in to look around, but standing outside I could honestly say that I could hardly recognize the place.
I know it was 16 years since I'd been there but it had just changed so much. I only stayed about 20 minutes then headed back to Darmstadt, it was nice to get on the trams again which brought back many memories of going to and coming back from work.
I got off the tram in the center of Darmstadt at Luisenplatz which is like the town square. From here I decided to look around the town and see what I could recognize. I spent about four hours looking around, including going to see the apartment I use to rent, and to be hones,t I was thinking I'd wasted my time and money coming back. Although it was nice, I could have flown over in the morning and flown back at night because I'd seen it all; it was all so quick.Continued on the next page
