The residents of Rome woke up to a nice surprise Thursday morning. Especially those with an apartment on the first floor. A massive storm early thursday morning and heavy rains all through out the day lead to flooding in the streets and homes of Rome. Although for many is was just a matter of cleaning the half an inch or more of water on their floors, for others it was much more serious.

One man drowned in his flooded basement apartment. Another man is still missing. Several families had to be rescued. And there were more then 2000 emergency calls to police, fire, and ambulance services.

Getting around the city was nearly impossible as well. Flights and trains were delayed or cancelled. Traffic and closed off roads made it nearly impossible to get anywhere in the city. Many people were literally trapped in their homes. Even the Colosseum was closed.

This kind of rain has not occurred in Rome in more then a decade now with a total of 74 mm of water had fallen in just under and hour and a half. And the forecast calls for more rain throughout the weekend.
