Thanksgiving Pies for Everyone: Vegan Pie in the Sky
For years, millions of Twin Peaks fans have been in search of a “damn fine cherry pie.” Oh, they’ve found good ones, and they’ve found great ones, but damn fine? That’s a rare thing. Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero, two best-selling vegan chefs, may have just the recipe for the pie we’ve been waiting for: “She’s My Cherry Pie.” The thought of it makes us want to sing. It’s just one of 75 “out-of-this-world recipes for pies, tarts, cobblers and more” in their new cookbook, Vegan Pie in the Sky.
With the Thanksgiving countdown on, pie season is officially open. While some will be drooling (ewww) over Moskowitz’s and Romero’s Voluptuous Pumpkin Pie, I’m much more interested in their Sweet Potato Brazil Nut Crunch Pie. If I decide to be a little more untraditional, I’ll go for the Pear & Cranberry Galette—although I don’t know if I’ll let it out of the kitchen.
There really is something very special about pie, and Vegan Pie in the Sky offers some very special pies and pastries, along with traditional favorites like Apple Pie and Apple Brown Betty. Those desirous of something more sophisticated might be tempted by the Cappuccino Mousse Pie, which is a lot easier to make than it sounds—ideal for an elegant dessert. Or perhaps that masterpiece of artistic engineering, Strawberry Kiwi Crème Tart, would be more to your liking.
Whether you want to prepare a down-home favorite or something a lot more uptown, Vegan Pie in the Sky has the recipe you need. The variety is excellent, and I love that the authors mention Special Agent Dale Cooper on the first page.
