Vitamin E and YOUR MAN!

Vitamins and supplements are a part of our modern day life and many people I know take them on a daily basis. I wish this wasn’t the case but here’s a bit of information that I came across today which should make you take a fresh look at what your man may inadvertently be doing to himself.
The Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) published an article recently on vitamin E supplementation and prostate cancer. The study was done to answer the question whether vitamin E supplementation reduced the risk of prostate cancer in healthy men.
The study in question followed over 35,000 healthy men for 7 years. These men were randomly divided into 4 groups with group 1 receiving selenium (200ug/day) and a vitamin E placebo, group 2 vitamin E (400iu/day) and a selenium placebo, group 3 both selenium and vitamin E and group 4 both placebos.
And now for the results! Those receiving the vitamin E only had a significantly increased risk of prostate cancer. A sobering thought to ponder when he is popping this vitamin on a daily basis. Furthermore, vitamin E supplementation was not found to reduce the risk of other cancers, cardiovascular disease and all-cause mortality.
Interestingly, those taking vitamin E and selenium together did not have the same increased risk but had no benefit in terms of reducing prostate cancer, other cancers and cardiovascular disease.
What’s the message here and what should he be doing differently? I think that this is another warning that vitamins and supplements are poor substitutes for a healthy diet and care should be exercised when it comes to anything we consume. This despite what we are encouraged to take by vitamin and supplement lobbyists and advertisements.
I’m going to say this yet again. Nature presents us with a complex formula of vitamins, minerals and ingredients which have worked for thousands of years for man and womankind. The supplement industry doesn’t begin to understand this sophistication and complexity and your best option for disease prevention is to eat a diversity of healthy organic food straight from the ground.
