If you’re off to a company holiday party or a Christmas dinner at the in-laws, making sure your nails are in season and ahead of the trends is a must. The big nail polish companies like OPI and Essie consistently come out with unique collections just for the holidays, further emphasizing just how important it is to have an impeccable look.

With fun and creative names like All A-Bordeaux The Sled (a dark shiny burgundy/brown, very "Twilight"-esque), or Sapphire In The Snow (a “blurple”–fusion of blue and purple) OPI went Over The Taupe (a shade from their Bright Pair collection) with sparkles, tints, and unusual shades this year.

On the other hand, Essie kept their collection strictly for wining and dining. With a total of three colors for its holiday collection, Essie was clearly uninterested in anything outside the realm of simple. From a classic red called Lolipop to the ultra-trendy Jade shade called Mint Candy Apple, Essie’s holiday collection is a prime example of “less equals more”.

One might say Zoya’s MatteVelvet lies more in Essie’s category, while China Glaze’s Loves You So Much holiday collection certainly falls into OPI’s “bigger and bolder is better” attitude.

If you’ve been eying a bright sparkly blue (such as Pure Ice’s Strapless) for a while now, this is the time to go all out and enjoy the flowing drinks while you’re showing off your freshly manicured nails, of course. Into neon pink these days (like Essie’s Flirty Fuschia)? Nobody’s stopping you.
