Why Do So Many Godmen Behave Un-Godly?
Sinead O’ Connor a musician and mother of four recounted from her childhood days how revered were the bishops in her native, mainly Catholic Ireland:
If a bishop came walking down the street, people would move to make a path for him. If a bishop attended a national sporting event, the team would kneel to kiss his ring. If someone made a mistake, instead of saying, “Nobody’s perfect,” we said, “Ah sure, it could happen to a bishop.
She then went on to describe her own experience spending 18 months in An Grianán Training Centre, a correctional institution for problem girls in Dublin. There she witnessed psychological and sexual abuse from church leaders first hand. She wrote, “In October 2005, a report sponsored by the Irish government identified more than 100 allegations of sexual abuse by priests in Ferns, a small town 70 miles south of Dublin, between 1962 and 2002.”
Sure did the authority investigate, but the matter was quickly hushed up. O’ Connor writes, “The very people who say they are the keepers of the Holy Spirit are stamping all over everything the Holy Spirit truly is.”
Then in the 1st week of March came news of sex scandals from India’s own godmen. When the local news channels broadcasted videos of Swami Paramahamsa Nityananda frolicking with two South Indian actresses, the guru’s Uttar Pradesh ashram was run over by outraged people. In the resultant stampede 63 people, all women and children were crushed to death. The Swami was hail and hearty though.
On the heel of this there came another news from the capital New Delhi where police arrested a godman, Sant Swami Bhimanand for running a vice ring involving air-hostesses, college students and housewives. Dipankar Gupta, a former sociology professor in New Delhi made an apt comment, “Ninety-five percent of god-men give the remaining five percent a bad name.”
I am extending my unconditional apology to the GOP politicians for writing on their immorality and double standards. If the holier-than-thou god-men cannot control their zippers I have no business blaming Republican politicians. They are mere mortal human beings.
