The Washington-based Center for Auto Safety, reported that 700 accidents and six deaths resulted from the Audi accelerator defect. The German car maker’s sales spiraled from nearly 75,000 in 1985, to just over 12,000 in 1991. In 2000, Audi topped its previous numbers with a total of 80,372 sales, whereas sales in 2009 were 82,716.
Consumers have filed 23 lawsuits against Toyota, about half involve electronic malfunction. So far eight suits have been filed for death and injury. Consumers and Toyota dealers have voiced their concerns about the slow response, and lack of information regarding the defect.
Toyota’s reputation could suffer from the their slow response in return. Only time will tell.
