Driving a Volt: The Race to Get It Charged

The story you are about to read is not the typical story.
This one is exciting!
A brand new 2012 Chevy Volt was just dropped off for me to drive and write about. This baby was to be mine for the entire week!
Sure, you’re thinking, why does this guy think he’s so lucky? It can’t be because he gets to be a “treehugger” for a week. It’s not just that I wouldn’t be buying any gas, it was that I would be driving a car that is not only a game changer – I would be a driving a Chevy for which I would be buying absolutely no gas for.
Let’s face it, part of the excitement stems from the simple fact that I’ve never met a Chevy that is slow to open up on the freeway – and that’s all I thought, is what is this baby going to be like on the freeway?
It was a stylish looking car – some of my lady friends called it sexy – that’s right, a sexy electric car.
I stood outside, walked around it – getting a good look at it. The light from the beautiful sunshine filled day seem to hit the chrome outline of bowtie logo sitting front and center on Chevy’s trademark split grill – it was enough to make any lover of cars drool.

Once I sat in that comfortable driver’s seat, I was welcomed by a futuristic sound and colorful graphics on both of the driver information screens welcomed me.
I pressed my foot on the brake and pressed the ignition start button, the car started. I didn’t hear an engine, the screens came on and there was a futuristic start up sound. It felt like I was driving the Starship Enterprise instead of a car, I couldn’t help but be in awe.
Amazingly, I still heard nothing. Then again, the car’s premium Bose speaker system didn’t help much. I turned it off – still heard not even a sound. Amazing!
It was time to take off.
Driving the car was quite the opposite of the experience I was used to. The cars that I drove were powerful and had take off, and then again so did this… But I couldn’t hear the power. There was no way to describe it except to say it was like deafening silence.
