GM is planning to boost it's production of the Volt from 16,000 to as much as 60,000 units. One of the primary things impeding current sales of the Volt is GM’s inability to produce the cars on more massive scale.

To add further hurt to GM’s Volt sales, there will be a temporary shutdown of the Detroit-Hamtramck factory in preparation for more efficient production equipment. GM is hopeful that the technological upgrades will expedite Volt production to help achieve its goal of being available in all 50 states by the end of this year. GM also wants to make buyers beware that because of the factory shut down to expect limited availability of the Volt in June and July.

In Europe, GM will have the Chevy Volt as well as a rebadged cousin called the Opel Ampera. Opel’s version will have different body styling.

GM’s ramping up on the production of the Volt is a smart move, although a risky one as well. It has been established for some time that GM loses money on every Volt sold at the hefty price tag of $41,000. By making the necessary upgrades to the efficiency of the Volt factory plants, they will eventually see a profit.

The Chevy Volt is truly a technological breakthrough. Just to sit in the interior of the car and explore the various nuances of its construction is an experience unto itself. It proves that not only are we on the brink of revolutionizing the automobile industry, it also proves that if GM can maintain its consistency in self improvement… It too, can be a marvel again.

*Chevrolet Volt has been awarded Motor Trend’s Car of The Year.
