Conserve Water Using Low Flow Shower Heads
If there was ever a simple change that anyone is capable of making by themselves that would reap benefits for the environment as well as the homeowner, it is the installation of low flow shower heads. This is a tip learned from a plumber in Port Charlotte that actually came as a surprise. After some further research, the savings impact in water and energy was staggering. And the best part is there are many models to choose from and some can even be purchased for under $20 that will perform as well as their less efficient counterparts and you won't need a local plumber to install one.
People these days do not need to be convinced to do the right thing for the environment. Recycling is commonplace and hardly a day passes without a reference to "going green." But even though we live in an era of ever growing social consciousness and a time of pervasive information sharing, most people do not have all the information they need to live a truly eco-friendly life and the common shower head is a great example of this lack of information.
More often than not, people are surprised to know that up to 20% of the water being used within homes can be directly attributed to shower usage. Think about that for a moment, that is 20% off all consumption in homes. Next, think about the millions of homes in the country and the volume of water used just for bathing is staggering.
Now here is where it gets interesting. A low flow shower head can use as little as one half a gallon of water per minute compared to as much as four gallons of water per minute for some older models. Even if a homeowner chose a less efficient variety that used one gallon per minute, the savings could be four to five thousand gallons of water per year per person. If you have a family of four, the savings would be enough to have a noticeable difference on an average water bill each month.
