In an article just published in the Washington Post, Marion Nestle, a professor in the Nutrition, Food Studies, and Public Health Department at New York University said "I think the agency has discretion, but its under enormous political pressure to approve (the salmon) without labeling".

Congressman Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) added "This to me raises questions about who the agency is protecting...They are clearly protecting industry and not the public."

There is an easy and more healthful answer to the FDA and food industry's non-information policy. When you shop for salmon, insist on wild-caught fish. All GM salmon will be farm-raised. The health and environmental benefits of wild-caught salmon compared to farm raised have been widely reported.

It's becoming apparent that genetically modified animals for our consumption are coming, like it or not. Whether you agree or not that "GM" and "non-GM" are the same, the more important question is, do you have a right to know, and thereby, choose?

At the moment, the issue centers around salmon. You can bet that similar beef, pork, and poultry products will be coming soon, to a grocer near you.
