KidLit: The Adventures of Ginger and Rusty Fox by Tim Ostermeyer
Coming to bookshelves November 23, 2010, is a charming storybook, The Adventures of Ginger and Rusty Fox. It is distinguished by the wildlife photography of author Tim Ostermeyer. The story is simple, two young foxes (kits) decide to explore the world around them, and meet up with other forest denizens.
Among the animals they meet are deer, a wolf, a bear, a cougar, bobcats, and two little girls. Enhancing The Adventures of Ginger and Rusty Fox is a “fact page” for every animal mentioned in the book, including humans.
As the kits explore their environment they are careful to avoid or elude the more dangerous animals. They come to the edge of a lake and see there is an island in the middle (Treasure Island), and they are curious to see what is sparkling in the sun on the island. The kits have been well trained by their parents and do not swim alone. Soon they are joined by mom and dad, and they all swim to the island together.
It is on Treasure Island that they meet Emma and Sophia and discover a chest that the foxes cannot open. Emma and Sophia help them open the chest which contains two separate treasures that the foxes and children share.
The Adventures of Ginger and Rusty Fox is a pastoral tale that will appeal to younger children and young readers, and makes a suitable bedtime story. The pictures of the animals in their natural habitat and the information supplied about each animal will teach them about the species that live in the world around us.
