Rocknoceros is a Washington, DC-area trio that has been playing together for over twenty years (literally—they started playing as childhood friends who went on to playing music). Their fourth CD, “Colonel Purple Turtle,” is a musical tribute to animals, friendship, and science. Employing a variety of genres, Rocknoceros sings about worms, frogs, chickens, dogs, beetles, coyotes (“Truman Coyote,” that is), foxes, and elephants (“Harry Elefante”), as well as the moon, the sun, conservation, and more.

Colonel Purple Turtle is a theme album in which the eponymous turtle is the star. He introduces listeners to his animal friends and teaches how to be a friend, take care of the planet, and have fun. The songs are lively, energetic, and easy to learn—kids will be singing along in an instant.

Colonel Purple Turtle’s Purple Turtle Journal is a storybook written by Rocknoceros (Coach Cotton, Williebob, and Boogie Bennie) and illustrated by Missy Sheldrake. It introduces residents of Soggy Bog and some of their visitors. Available for purchase with the CD or separately, it is a nice complement to the songs, reinforcing some of the themes—friendship, sharing, cooperation, and other important concepts.

Colonel Purple Turtle and Colonel Purple Turtle’s Purple Turtle Journal are recommended for ages four through twelve. The combination of musical sophistication and silly word play make them a good choice for families—the kids can rock out without the adults getting irritated at hearing the same stuff over and over (there’s too much variety to get bored). Before they realize it, Moms and Dads will be singing along with their kids and Rocknoceros.
