Sing along, clap along, stretch along, stamp along--Jim Gill Presents Music Play for Folks of All Stripes is truly an interactive CD. Jim Gill’s professed goal is bring out the fun, and he does it with musical games. Combining spoken word with songs, Gill invites families to join in the fun with an album that includes a DVD that shows them just how to do that. Silliness reigns supreme in songs that encourage whispering, moving, gargling, pantomiming, and bouncing. Listeners may even find that they learn a thing or two about music (and other subjects).

Among the musical pieces with which Gill and his friends play are “Habanera” (Carmen), Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony, “This Little Light of Mine,” and “Tea for Two” (reinterpreted as “Two for Tea”). There is no right way to move to the songs; in some songs Gill calls out various words and phrases (as in “Truck Stop”) and participants interpret them physically and individually.

Jim Gill, in addition to being a musician and author, is a child development specialist who provides—through his music—opportunities for children and adults to play together. The emphasis is not on the music but on play. Families, pre-schools, camps, and other environments that combine children and adults will benefit from the Jim Gill Presents Music Play for Folks of All Stripes experience. With both structured and free-form movement, Gill offers an experience that is both fun and educational (but don’t tell anybody I mentioned the “educational” part). Just make sure there’s enough “Bananas” to go around—use pretend ones, they’re cheaper.

Two words describe Bob Etier: "female" and "weird." Like many freelance writers, there's something about her that isn't quite right. Read her stuff and find out what.
