Regular readers of this feature know that its writer is opposed to giving children gifts of candy, whether the occasion be Valentine’s Day, Christmas, Chanukah (okay, I make an exception for gelt), or any of the dozens of other occasions for which chocolate is molded in novelty shapes. The reason is quite simple: the more candy that children receive, the less there is for “grown-ups.” While children may want candy, by contrast, adults need it. Similar sentiments apply to engineers who waste their time designing toys for children.

If there is a sweet child in your life who actually deserves a Valentine’s gift, wouldn’t you feel much more comfortable giving a DVD, book, or CD? I know I would. Fortunately for us, there are lots of children’s entertainment choices related to Valentine’s Day. Angelina Ballerina, the mouse who proves you don’t have to be a princess to wear pink, is the star of a new video from Lionsgate and HiT Entertainment, Angelina Ballerina: Sweet Valentine (release date: January 3, 3012).

Angelina has a secret admirer this Valentine’s Day, and her friends help her unravel the mystery of whom it might be, and Angelina and her friends learn that a friendship club is a much sweeter idea than a girls’ club in this DVD tribute to “dancing, skating, singing and best friends forever.” There are five episodes on Angelina Ballerina: Sweet Valentine: “Angelina’s Secret Valentine,” “Angelina and the Hearts on Ice,” “Angelina’s Big News,” “Angelina and the Mouslinghood of Dancing,” and “Angelina and the Laughing Poet.” They support social skills, including friendship, cooperation, sharing, generosity, kindness, and loyalty.

Angelina Ballerina: Sweet Valentine is available on DVD, as a digital download, and on demand. It is recommended for ages two through seven, and includes two bonus features: “Angelina’s Picture Game” and “Get Up and Dance” Music Video.

Remember, the less candy you buy for children, the more there will be at 50% off the day after Valentine’s Day.
