Can there be a better gift for a Thomas the Tank Engine fan than a six-DVD set? Well, yeah…a 1000-piece play set, but you only want to give those to kids who don’t live with you. This week, Lionsgate and HiT Entertainment released two new titles for Thomas’ preschool buddies: the single disc Thomas & Friends: Rescue on the Rails, (also available on-demand and as a digital download) and the six-DVD set, Thomas & Friends: Adventure on the Tracks.

There are five heroic episodes (“Fiery Flynn,” “James to the Rescue,” “Edward the Hero,” and “Stop that Bus!”) and several bonuses (“Who’s Pulling Into the Station?” Game, “Thomas, You’re the Leader” karaoke music video, and activities and fun with Driver Perkins) on Thomas & Friends: Rescue on the Rails. Kids will learn being a hero requires more than strength or speed; working together as a team, generosity, and caring are all important components of heroism—anyone can be a hero. These and more positive values are emphasized in episodes in which the Sodor Search and Rescue Team is called into action to help Bertie who is stuck on Shake Shake Bridge, derailed Gordon, and Thomas whose firebox is on fire.

The six DVDs that comprise Thomas & Friends: Adventure on the Tracks are: Percy’s Ghostly Trick & Other Thomas Stories, Thomas and the Jet Engine & Other Adventures, Rusty to the Rescue, Percy Saves the Day, Thomas Comes to Breakfast & Other Thomas Adventures, and Steamies vs. Diesels. Each DVD includes bonus features, including sing-alongs, galleries, games, and read-along stories.

Thomas & Friends is recommended for ages two through five, and offers a magical world of imagination where children share “adventures with their engine friends while experiencing timeless life lessons of discovery, friendship, and cooperation.” The series reinforces positive social skills and self-image. DVD release date: December 6, 2011.
