As hard as it might be to believe—there is someone who wishes ill to Babar and his family at Yule time. Pom, Arthur, Flora, and Alexander (Babar’s children) learn about Christmas and write a letter to Father Christmas, inviting him to Celesteville (the land of the elephants). The children are enchanted by the thought of getting every toy they can imagine.

In Babar and Father Christmas, Babar’s worst enemy, Rataxes the Rhinoceros, intercepts their letter and attempts to get all the toys for himself. When the children don’t get a response from the jolly old saint, Babar stops in Paris on his way to visit Father Christmas at the North Pole. Rataxes is in hot pursuit, following Babar from one false lead to another. Finally, Babar finds himself the guest of Father Christmas in his wondrous toy shop where Babar arranges to give Santa an especially nice Christmas present.

Babar and Father Christmas is a whimsical, humorous addition to holiday film libraries, an adventure the family can enjoy together. In addition to the title story, the DVD offers two episodes that amplify the values and spirit of Christmas, “A Child in the Snow” and “The Gift.” Also included is an eight-page coloring book. (DVD release date: November 8, 2011).
