Snake Oil Anyone? Webster’s online dictionary defines the word science as “Knowledge of principles and causes; ascertained truth of facts”. That being said let’s touch upon what science is not. Medical research paid for by attorneys prepping lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies for economic gains.

The state of Maryland reported its first case of measles since 2009, even though Maryland boasts one of the highest vaccination rates in the US. This news foreshadows a growing trend in the western world, parents decisively choosing not to vaccinate their children against preventable disease. Why? According to a recent survey the CDC reports 30% of parents polled deem the vaccine as a direct cause of learning disabilities, citing Autism as their biggest concern.

In 1998 the now disgraced and stripped of his MD status Andrew Wakefield published a study in the Lancet Medical Journal directly tying the MMR vaccine to the onset of Autism. Wakefield’s team has since admitted the study was blatant fraud and the data “doctored” to push his personal agenda and his version of a rival MMR vaccine. Consequently the numbers of un-vaccinated children has risen exponentially every year since, causing measles resurgence and growth into epidemic proportions.

Researchers have tried numerous times to establish the link Andrew Wakefield published to no avail. Millions of children worldwide receive this vaccination before age two and like any medical intervention a small percentage suffers ill effects Autism cannot be proven as one of them. Add to the mix greedy lawyers creating their own mini industry suing pharmaceutical companies we’re left wondering who and what to believe.
