Tragic Rape of Young Student Comes to Deathly End in India

Today I am ashamed of my Indian heritage, but wait, don’t get me wrong—I am not proud of my new American identity either, for it happens here too, every day, and not even people in power get serious about it.

 I know at the end it does not not matter whether we talk of the of East or the West, it is only a matter of what kind of society we have created for ourselves, and in these days, there is hardly any difference.

A 23-year-old paramedical student who was fighting for her life in a cold hospital bed in Singapore—a mindless victim of gang rape and brutal attack, died today. She was assaulted for almost an hour by six human-looking animals, and thrown out of a moving bus in New Delhi. On Dec. 26 she was airlifted to Singapore for specialized treatment, and against all odds, she was clinging to life for three more days, but finally her agony came to an end. 

India’s capital, New Delhi has the highest number of sex crimes in the country, where a rape is reported on average every 18 hours. Why this unprecedented rise of aggression against women, where women are worshipped as goddesses? Why has violence become the way of life in the land of Mahatma?

Why? Why? Why?

When I wrote For Our Daughters, I introduced an idea that only large scale education of girls can stop the age-old oppression against women, but now I have doubt. With progression of society we were supposed to tame our inner animals, but I see only the contrary to happen. Just the other day a homeless woman was burned with fire in California in a totally unprovoked situation. The man simply decided to pour alcohol over her and set fire.
