Zombie-Proof Condos In Kansas Sold Out
Looking for a condo that will survive disasters both natural and unnatural (i.e., the Zombie Apocalypse)? So are a lot of other people, apparently, as the trendy flats on offer at Survival Condo — a converted nuclear ballistic missile silo in Kansas — have already sold out. Running for a cool $2 million, the 1,820-square-foot condo-in-the-ground will not only grant you access to your own off-grid electricity (provided via solar and wind) and epoxy-hardened walls (proof against nuclear attack), but stainless steel GE appliances, Kohler bath fixtures and a Jacuzzi, not mention a full-size pool, spa, fitness room, library and movie theater.
Solar iPad Case Claims Days Of Free Power
We’ve featured lots of solar chargers that can provide a power boost when you’re in an outlet desert. We’ve also featured a lot of nifty cases made from sustainable materials that can protect your tablet without adding extra bulk. The KudoCase is all of these things at once. Made of a hard, biodegradable corn-based plastic, the KudoCase, from Wireless NRG, incorporates solar technology capable of converting both indoor and outdoor light into energy to charge the iPad. According to the company, using the case on a daily basis could extend the iPad’s battery charge by up to 10 days.
US Army Building Its Own Clean-Power Grids
Recently the U.S. armed forces, unlike the rest of the government, has thrown its full weight behind renewable energy technologies that could help reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, and provide greater security for ground troops in remote areas. Currently, Army engineers are working to develop renewable-energy based microgrids that can work independently of traditional grid power. The Army’s microgrid plan would harness energy from the sun and wind to ease the burdens associated with transporting fossil fuels to dangerous areas.
