Miracle Tonic - Good Ole Coconut Oil
With all the talk about the dangers of cosmetic and skincare additives such as parabens, toluene, and formaldehyde, a discerning shopper will want to read the labels of ALL the products they buy. I am definitely one of those people.
So if you've seen a picture of me, you can see that the 'fro I usually sport is extremely unruly at most times, and has a tendency to dry out. Therefore, it's extremely important that I find highly moisturizing and softening products. Over the past three months, I have easily spent over $250 on haircare and skincare products alone, being sure to buy products with the least amount of ingredients.
So, the results have been varied, but then I had a girlfriend recommend the simplest product of all:

The results? WOW!!! As you can see, my coconut oil gets well used, the bottle only cost about $5.60 CAD, and will probably last me over six months, even with daily usage. Now, after washing my hair, I scoop some out of the jar, rub my hands together to let it melt, and rub it into my wet hair. Not only does it define my super-curly hair, but it also keeps it soft and manageable all day long.
Another added benefit? I can use it on my ENTIRE body. It keeps my skin from drying out, and gives my skin a nice glow and sheen. Considering there is only one ingredient (coconut oil, how simple is that?), I don't have to worry about what chemicals and fragrances are being absorbed by my skin and doing some crazy damage to my internal organs.
My lesson learned? That I no longer need to spend hundred of dollars to get the results that a six dollar solution can give. Sticking to my overall theme, this shows that keeping it simple not only is better for your body, it's also better on your pockets and our lovely planet.
By the way, before you throw away all of your current cosmetic and skincare products, check out this extremely comprehensive database which will tell you on a scale of 0 to 10 (with 10 being extremely hazardous) how your favorite products will rate.
Don't let this information scare you; Use it to think about what you also put on, not just in, your body, and make a move to choose more sustainable and healthy products. Your body will thank you!
