Toronto's New Law To Enforce Green Roofs - Page 2
Another angle to this story is the commercial opportunities provided to the green roof industry. As demand for green roofs increases it is a possibility that price increases as well. At worst, the industry is given free reign since their customers are required to abide to the new legislation. If the industry is not regulated as well, this can prove to be a very lucrative time for green roof installers, much to the detriment of the developers and ultimately the consumers.
Other cities like New York, Chicago and Minneapolis, among others, offer some sort of incentive to the public such as tax credits, grants and subsidies. These incentives help increase acceptance of such legislation, and perhaps reduce initial resistance. With proper management and communication, it is hoped that these ventures turn out to be a success story, so that other cities all over the world can follow suit. The benefits of greening city spaces much outweigh the cost; hopefully our politicians will help everyone to see this for what it is without falling prey to politics, power struggles and corruption.
