For residents of Columbus, Ohio, the Waste Not Center is a resource.

Keeping perfectly usable items out of landfills and recycling centers, the Waste Not Center receives donations (tax deductible) from individuals and businesses of supplies that would otherwise be discarded and makes them available to teachers, artists and non-profit organizations at no charge other than a small annual membership fee.

Here are some of the items offered: Paper, foam core, writing pads, glass vases, notebooks, silk flowers, paints of all kinds, books, brushes, videos, glue, folders, fabric, envelopes, pens, pencils, markers of different colors, containers of all sizes.

Waste Not is an initiative of the Central Ohio Sustainability Alliance, which also has another initiative called the Central Ohio Sustainability Roundtable.

Wouldn't it be great if every city in America and other countries had such initiatives to reduce waste and reuse unwanted or discarded items so as to reduce the pressure on manufacturers to use virgin sources to produce the things we all need?
