Java Off-Track: Break Bread with Via Via
The term “alternative traveler”has as many meanings as there are destinations. Generally speaking, it refers to a gypsy-breed of wanderer who prefers hostels over Hiltons, Durian over buffets, tuk tuks over hired cars. Alternative travelers enjoy a more authentic experience not only because they usually shell out a fraction of the “tourist price”, but also because it’s the closest experience a foreigner can have to interacting with another culture in a genuine way. There’s no corporate homogeneity, no foot-tall drinks served in bong-shaped plastic, no over-priced booze cruises, no T-shirts with dirty catch phrases. Sterility and debauchery are the anti-goals for the alternative traveler. Interaction is the destination. And in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, there is a cafe/guest house that embodies the humble and earnest yearning for authenticity of the off-track travelers. Welcome to Via Via.
Via Via began in 1995 in Belgium by travelers who sought a global gathering place for the “off- track” traveler. During a recent visit to Yogyakarta (Yogya for short), I sat down with the local staff and chatted about the goals of Via Via: authentic exchange between locals and travelers, supporting local arts movements, and outstanding organic food, all of which I can personally recommend.
Via Via Cafe highlights include the traditional Yogya drink, es dawet, (a sweet and refreshing mix of coconut milk, palm sugar, and rice flour), and the curry sandwiches, all made with fresh, locally-produced ingredients and homemade breads baked daily.
Via Via Yogya is divided into three channels: the shop/cafe, the guesthouse, and the tour company.. All channels seek to follow the same principles of educating newcomers of the cultural community in ways that are respectful and sustainable. The Yogya Fair Trade shop features products made locally (save for the outstanding section of Belgium chocolate) such as artisan batik, coconut tableware, and a wide selection of all-natural bath and body products.
