After three long years of advanced planning and designing, Royal Caribbean International Cruise Line has announced the building of two new ships. The ships will be the first in an exciting new line appropriately named the Quantum class, offering a “quantum leap forward in cruising.” Royal Caribbean describes the Quantum class with the powerful phrase "Designed for WOW."

Building of the two new ocean liners began  with the first pieces of steel being cut at the Meyer Werft Shipyard located in Papenburg, Germany, where construction of both ships will continue. Until now, this intriguing development has gone under the code name “Project Sunshine.” Cutting the steel is a very important milestone in the construction process of any ship because it signifies moving from the planning stages to actually physically putting the ship together.

The new ships will be named Quantum of the Seas, and Anthem of the Seas. Quantum will make her debut in autumn of 2014, while Anthem is set to sail in spring of 2015. Each ship will be 158,000 tons and have a passenger capacity of 4,100. This is a bit smaller than the Oasis and the Allure of the Seas which hold 5,400 passengers.

Royal Caribbean has a reputation for being the first to offer a number of innovative features on its ships, such as rock climbing walls, surf simulators, and ice skating rinks. Royal Caribbean’s recent press release ensures that the new Quantum class of ships will follow in that state-of-the-art tradition with experiences and amenities never seen before. Each class has introduced new and exciting features on board, and Quantum class promises even bigger and better things.

Chairman and CEO of Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd., Richard D. Fain stated, “Throughout our history we have made huge strides in cruise ship design and innovation and the Quantum class will be no exception. We look forward to introducing consumers to Quantum cruising."

“Quantum class, as it will now be known, is saying that the innovative spirit of Royal Caribbean is alive and well,” said Adam Goldstein, President and CEO of Royal Caribbean International, “That we have once again pushed the envelope substantially in terms of what a cruise ship can offer.”

Over the next few months Royal Caribbean will be revealing much more about what guests should expect to see on these two intriguing new ships.

In the words of Lisa Bauer, EVP of Global Sales and Marketing, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., “Really what we are saying about Quantum is, prepare to be wowed.”
