Artist’s Statement The sculptures I create are reproductions of figurines, or have been built under the influence of the figurine. By using the body of figurines the sculptures appear traditional, but at second glance it is revealed that these scaled-up figurines have had their decals or possessions stripped and replaced with unconventional, popular logo patterning through method of decal, or with hand built, pop icons. I have arrived to this formation after having done research on the ceramic figurine. When I allowed my love of pop culture merge with my obsession with clay and the figurine, I was able to produce interesting, pop inspired work. I am attracted to Red Rose Tea’s Wade figurines, and find great pleasure in remodelling them to include notorious celebrities or brands. It is essential that humour and irony exists within my work and that the piece is whimsical. I am interested in exploring a dialogue between the mass produced, mainstream figurine and the mass, mainstream icon. I am fascinated with the human obsession with celebrities and mass media and how certain moments and images can define a person or company. My intent is to explore this absurd obsession and lifestyle, and to bring light to current mainstream figures through my sculptures.
