John Ball joined the family business straight from school back in the 50s which his grandfather had started in 1909. Grandfather Edward Ball had been a coal miner who had taken canaries down the mine to test for the deadly methane as before opening a bird fancier's store. John's father developed the business into providing supplies for gardeners and nurserymen during the 'Dig for Victory' campaigns of World War II. After thirty years in business John and his brother sold out and he went on to become a professional business adviser in 1991. After positions of junior and senior adviser he went onto become CEO of a business support organisation in north west England. Now a freelance adviser he still works within business support as well as working with private clients. John relaxes by getting out into Lancashire's beautiful countryside and has a deep interest in the natural world. He has recently volunteered as a guided walk leader and reserve guide at the Wildlife Trust's Brockholes Nature Reserve
